What is the best make and model of closed hole flute?
My daughter has played for 3 years but wants to stay with closed hole and needs to use it in pep band, marching band, concert band, ratings band, and in competitions.

Because your daughter is going to be using her flute for all purposes… ( which is normally not advised ) you will probably be needing a step-up flute which will be more suitable for her playing level of 3 years. I would recommend the Yamaha YFL 365H. This flute has a sterling silver headjoint and silver plated body and foot.
I know this is not what you are asking but being a flute teacher, I am compelled to mention… once a flute has been used in pep band / marching band / parade / outdoor situations it cannot really be considered a competition – contest – audition ready flute. It would be so much better for you to shop around for a cheap little beginner marching flute and then look to purchasing her the upgrade intermediate or advanced flute (for her playing level). It is to be expected that any horn taken out of doors or on the marching field is going to take a beating… a real beating… and then it is NO LONGER a concert flute… it becomes the marching flute. You could find something to bang around outside for $100 or so dollars and know that if it gets dropped to the pavement or stepped on by the tuba player AND THEY DO … you have not invested alot of money or ruined the flute that she will have to depend on for regionals, solo & ensemble competitions, chair tests, concerts.. ect.
Then look to purchase the step up / advanced / or concert flute. I recommend the Yamaha 300 or 400 series that come with plugs that can be left in place therefore using the flute as a closed hole. When she gets ready… she can remove the plugs herself. You can buy it new or look for a used one in good condition. First, go in to the music store and have her play test the instrument to see it is comfortable for her.
And… I know that parents are really trying to be economical in these times, but you really get what you pay for… and when it comes to instruments… if you buy really cheap, what you wind up getting is a load full of headaches. At the store, the brands that have been in production for a good long while are Yamaha, Gemeinhardt, Emerson, Armstrong, Pearl. Be EXTRA sure you find out where the flute was manufactured. If you hear anything besides USA or Japan…. Please decline… others are a flute player’s / private lesson teacher’s / band director’s nightmare.
