Royal Reeds
What size reed should I use on my Alto Saxophone?
I’ve played the alto saxophone for about four years I usually use a 4 Rico Royal reed but now that I have more control over my tone should I use a softer reed or a harder one?
Depends what you’re playing. If you’re playing a song with general span of notes on the lower octave, then I’d suggest sticking to your current reed size or using a 3 1/2, as it allows a more wholesome sound to be produced.
If you are questioning your reed size, it obviously means you aren’t comfortable with it. Control and producing a pretty sound are probably the main objectives to playing a song – if you are having no issue with your current reed, I don’t see why you should feel obliged to change it, unless you are attempting to push yourself.
Moving up to a 4 1/2 is pretty heavy stuff. It may take a few days or weeks for your mouth to adjust to the new strength, so you’d have to practice pretty intensely during that time. Also, I’m super duper impressed that you’ve only been playing four years and you’re already using a size 4! I was using a standard 2 1/2 then! It means you’re really passionate about playing : )
Keep up the good work.
