Clay Flute
Can any body tell me how to make a clay flute?!!?!?
I want to make a clay flute (NOT A WHISTLE FLUTE. SO IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A RECORDER) can ANYONE give me reference links for information on to how to do this….because all I can find are ocarinas, animal whistles, and whistle flutes(which are recorders pretty much) and it is driving me INSANE!
You are going to have to do something tricky.
You will be using pottery clay in order to get a hard brittle resonate result.
But pottery clay shrinks while drying from working wetness and further shrinks during firing.
So you are going to have to find a model of the kind of flute you want with the holes in the right places – made of wood or metal or plastic. And measure the length and locations of all the holes you want and the mouthpiece.
Then you will have to fire a sample of the clay to see how much it shrinks in total – about 10-15% usually, but for a flute you need to be exact.
You then scale up the dimension by that percentage.
You roll a tube of clay of moderate wall thickness and use a metal tube to cut the holes in the wall and mold a mouth piece to adhere to the top.
After drying, you fire it.
And then try playing it to see if you succeeded.
